Sera knew Conan and Ran's identities before they introduced themselves. Although she claimed to know Ran from Karate tournaments, she additionally recognized Conan as a detective. This may indicate Sera has done research or follows stories about Conan's achievements or that she has had direct or indirect contact with Conan and Ran. However, Ran and Conan didn't recognize Sera. Sera might be one of Ran's martial arts rivals, although Ran, did not recognize her. In file 771, it is revealed that she also knows Professor Agasa, although she calls him "Professor whatshisname". Furthermore, Sera seems to decipher Conan's identity from chapter 779, Holmes's Apprentice, where she can predict that Conan would be able to solve this case, successfully.

Sera might be the younger sister of Shuichi Akai. Sera has bags under her eyes identical to Shuichi Akai's. Also, Sera Masumi's name is also incredibly similar to Mobile Suit Gundam character Sayla Mass (セイラ・マス, Seira Masu). Akai's name is derived from Sayla Mass's older brother's name, Char Anzable. Also, Conan said he has a feeling he had met her before.

Sera lived in Japan until three years ago when her family moved to America. This matches with the time when Akai was infiltrating the Organization. The family's move to America could be the FBI's attempt to protect them should something go wrong with Akai's mission. It's also to note that Andre Camel, Jodie Starling, and most likely James Black seem to recognize her from somewhere. On another interesting note, James Black was the first to recognize that Sera was a girl. Everyone else thought that she was a guy when they first saw her.


Faked Death?

Several abnormalities surrounding Akai's death invite the possibility that Akai faked his death with Conan and Mizunashi Rena's help. Inconsistent details like disappearing blood trails are evidence Akai's body was tampered with by someone other than Kir, and Conan's reaction to the news of Akai's death is suspiciously subdued. The theory is that Akai's death was faked by using blank cartridges and blood packets with small detonators to simulate gunshots. When Kir moves to the front of Akai's truck to prepare the bomb, it creates a gap of time where Gin and Vodka cannot see Akai's body with Kir's camera. At this time, Akai switches places with Rikumichi Kusuda's body which had been dressed up beforehand to look like Akai. Akai escapes the truck before it explodes. Meanwhile Conan's will loan Jodie Starling one of his identical cellphones which has Rikumichi's fingerprints on it. She will think they are Akai's and when she goes to validate the identity of the body with the police, it will match Rikumichi's fingerprints and she will be fooled into thinking Akai died.


Scar Akai
Scar Akai is a mysterious person of unknown allegiance who appeared some time after Kir apparently killed Shuichi Akai. It isn't clear if he is in fact the real Akai or someone else, possibly Bourbon, disguising as him. Scar Akai appears silently in front of the FBI and vanishes just as quickly.

Identity
It is unclear at this point if scar Akai is the real Akai Shuuichi or an imposter. So far, the commentary in the manga sidebars assumes scar Akai is the real Akai Shuuichi; however, the commentary has been purposefully misleading in past arcs. FBI agent Jodie Starling thinks he is the real Akai who managed to escape from death somehow, but has amnesia and cannot speak. Agent Camel is confused and wonders if scar Akai is a trap from the Org. Although Conan has yet to come into direct contact with scar Akai, Conan seemed thunderstruck after hearing about his existence and worriedly chased after him.

Known facts about scar Akai
Scar Akai after firing a gun at the bank robber holding Conan hostage. He uses his right hand.

* Scar Akai seems to be right handed given how he shot the handgun. Shuichi Akai is known to be a left-handed.
* Scar Akai somehow knows Kogoro Mouri's cell phone number.
* So far, both of Scar Akai's appearances have been in Beika city very close to one another. Teito Bank and the Beika department store are almost adjacent.
* Scar Akai is good at deduction. His red shirts case solution wasn't as complete as Okiya's and Conan's deductions, but he may not have had access to the internet and therefore info on the snowy mountains case with his "borrowed" phone.
* He is cautious enough to use a handkerchief to avoid leaving fingerprints while handing back the random man's cell phone which Scar Akai used to text Kogoro.
* Scar Akai is most likely male.

When Scar Akai handed back a cell phone to its owner, he spoke to that man. If he can't imitate voice in the first place, he must use his real voice which would alert the owner if he has a woman voice but an appearance of man. However, this alone can't rule out the possiblity of (s)he being female because there is a situation that Ran and Sonoko mistook Sera's gender from her appearance even they spoke with her for several minutes.
